The hot drink in restaurants today is (drum roll, please) tap water. Yes, folks, tap water. Soft drinks and bottled water are losing favor with penny-pinching diners who are looking to save money while eating out. A report from the NDP Group states that orders for revenue-generating drinks have dropped by 2.7 billion servings during the past five years. That’s 2.7 billion glasses of water requested rather than beer or soda.
Still, drinks like coffee and tap water still overtake the number of tap waters ordered. NDP reports that of the 50 billion beverages currently being served at restaurants, water accounts for just 8 percent. Soft drinks and coffee make up 49 percent, while the other percent is made up of iced tea, smoothies, frozen drinks, specialty coffees, etc.
A good way to upsell beverages in your restaurant is to offer specialized drinks and market them as healthy. While the economy stays dismal, consumers are still willing to shell out for a better health. If you’re in the market for a smoothie, espresso, coffee machine, etc., check out the selection at One Fat Frog Restaurant Equipment!
