Gainesville’s Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park may have a menacing name, but it looks like a place of beauty to me. Located in the north-westernmost part of Gainesville, Florida, off County Road 232, Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park features a 120 foot deep, 500 foot wide sinkhole. This natural depression in the Gainesville’s surface looks similar to the hopper of a mill, hence part of the park’s name. The devil part comes from animal bones found at the bottom of the sinkhole in Gainesville. Local Gainesville lore suggests these belonged to animals on their way to meet the Devil. How any animal could sin is beyond me.

The sides of the sinkhole in Gainesville are made of limestone – providing a geological record of this area of Gainesville. The Gainesville park features 12 springs that feed the pond at the bottom of the Gainesville sinkhole. Some fossil deposits have been found in the Gainesville sinkhole include shark teeth, marine shells, and some extinct animals. Most impressive, Gainesville. In 1976, 232 wooden steps, boardwalks, and an observation deck were put in by the State at the Gainesville sinkhole.
