Gainesville has got it going on! Two hours north of One Fat Frog’s headquarters in Orlando is Gainesville – the home to the 6th largest college campus in the US and one of the “best places to live and play” (as voted by National Geographic Adventure). Gainesville has a bustling cultural scene and has been home to the nationally recognized The Downtown Festival and Art Show for years. For those who like to dress up in olde-time garb, Gainesville is host to the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire.

Gainesville’s music scene has been kicking for years. Native living legend Tom Petty formed his band The Heartbreakers in Gainesville in 1976. I’ve never seen it, but I’m sure “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” the four-hour documentary about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has some great footage of Gainesville in the ’70s. Other famous musicians from Gainesville include Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, and Nash fame, and Don Felder and Bernie Leadon from The Eagles. Prolific punk band Against Me! formed in Naples, FL, but shortly after relocated to Gainesville. When their drummer, Warren Oakes, left the band in 2008, he opened up a Mexican restaurant in downtown Gainesville called Boca Fiesta. I’ve eaten there once before – its awesome.

In March of 2008, Blender Magazine named Gainesville “Best Place to Start a Band in the United States.” That’s most impressive and should be inspiring for every young Gainesville resident banging drums in his garage.
