One of the places One Fat Frog offers free delivery to is Jacksonville, FL. Nestled along the banks of the St. Johns River in north-east FL, Jacksonville has been the birthplace of several notable musicians – especially those in the “southern rock” genre.
As a salute to Jacksonville, a city One Fat Frog’s delivery trucks often venture to, here’s a list of some of the biggest names to come out of Jacksonville and tear up stages around the world. Hey, even musicians gotta eat!
Gary U.S. Bonds
Born in Jacksonville in 1939, r&b singer Gary U.S. Bonds. In 1961, his single “Quarter to Three” sold one million records, earning a gold disc. Originally born Gary Levone Anderson, a record executive gave him the “U.S. Bonds” stage name in hopes that people would confuse his records with actual U.S. bonds – earning him more airplay.
Lynryd Skynryd
A decade after forming in Jacksonville in 1964, southern rockers Lynryd Skynryd rose to worldwide fame. You’d be hard-pressed to find an American who hasn’t heard “Free Bird” or “Sweet Home Alabama” at least 1,000 times in their life. A tragic airplane crash in 1977 took the life of three of the band’s founding members, but the band reunited 10 years later with the original singer’s little brother taking over the duties of lead singer.
Derek Trucks
Grammy-winning guitar prodigy was born in Jacksonville in 1979 and by age 12, he had already caught the attention of the music industry. When he was 15, he formed the Derek trucks Band, a band he still performs with today. He also plays guitar for the Jacksonville-founded rock band Allman Brothers. Derek also performs with blues singer Susan Tedeschi, whom he married in 2001. The couple records music at their studio in Jacksonville.
Molly Hatchet
Formed in Jacksonville in 1975, Molly Hatchet is known for two things: their fantasy-themed album covers and their hit single “Flirtin’ With Disaster.” They’re now a classic group of the “southern rock” genre alongside other Jacksonville institutions like Lynryd Skynryd. The named their band after an infamous “woman of the night.”
38 Special
Formed in Jacksonville in 1975 (same year as Molly Hatchet), 38 Special was a stable of the southern rock scene until they moved onto bigger, arena type music in the ’80s. Their most successful single is “Hold on Loosely,” which cracked the Billboard top 50 in 1981.
