When I was visiting my dad in Los Angeles, California a few summers ago, I noticed something peculiar. Almost all the restaurants offered vegan and gluten free options. This wasn’t something I was used to seeing everywhere in Orlando. Yes, there are many places that have these options, but they are normally clustered together in districts, such as the milk district and hippie type places around Orlando. But it seemed, EVERYWHERE I went, these options were offered. I soon realized the lifestyle of Los Angeles-ees was different than those of people from Orlando, like myself. Vegan-ism and gluten free was offered everywhere because so many people living there had that lifestyle. This is a very important thing to note. It wouldn’t be likely you would find so many vegan options in Austin, Texas or New Orleans because that lifestyle isn’t as prevalent. While my dad lived in Los Angeles, he actually started to take on a vegetarian diet because there were just so many options available, oftentimes even more than meat options!
START UP RESTAURANT OWNERS, it’s vital to know what type of lifestyle is centered around where you want to open your restaurant, because this can affect dietary choices! If you are in Orlando and want to open a vegan restaurant, the milk district, mills and downtown are areas which attract a lot of vegans and vegetarians! My favorite places that offer vegan options are tako cheena (can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve mentioned them, you’d think they were sponsored), pom poms, ethos vegan kitchen, and dandelion communitea cafe.
