One Fat Frog is looking forward to Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t even be surprised if one of us comes to work dressed as a turkey tomorrow. Of course, that could be dangerous, because a few members of the staff love to hunt. Either way, we’re eagerly anticipating one of our favorite food holidays.
As you get ready for Thanksgiving, pretty soon you’re going to be preparing some of your standard dishes: stuffing, sweet potato casserole, turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and the like. So where did you get your recipe? Probably from a family member or friend, right? One of my favorite things about food is that most recipes have a story behind it. Sure, sometimes we get a recipe from a website or TV show and try it, but a lot of it has an emotional and nostalgic connection for us.
I learned how to cook stuffing by copying my mom’s “famous recipe.” Since I become an adult, I don’t have a whole lot of memories with my mom; not because I don’t see her anymore, but because my formative years are behind me and those growing moments that children share with their parents are largely gone. One exception, however, was when the two of us worked in the kitchen to make the best Thanksgiving stuffing we could make. In case you’re wondering, the stuffing came out wonderful, but the memory is more important.
One Fat Frog loves pretty much everything about food and cooking. But as long as we’ve been serving and working with chefs and restaurant owners, we will never get sick of hearing those stories – stories about a special menu item dedicated to a loved one or about a signature dish that recalls their childhood. With Thanksgiving right around the corner and extra time with friends and family coming up, I’m sure you will have some new food-centered stories to share. One Fat Frog wishes you a great Thanksgiving and hopes that your stories are good.
