Sbarro, the pizza restaurant best known for its presence in virtually every mall in America, is taking a step away from the mall scene. Next week, the company is opening its first Pizza Cucinova restaurant in Columbus, Ohio.
J. David Karam, CEO of Sbarro, describes the move as “a completely separate concept, designed to be developed primarily in strip centers.” Currently Sbarro has more than 1,000 locations in 40 different countries, mostly in shopping malls.
Pizza as fast food is becoming more of a popular trend in the restaurant industry. Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint, an Atlanta-based company developed by Matt Andrew, cofounder of Moe’s Southwest Grill, recently opened its doors. PizzaRev and Blaze Pizza are springing up in California, with the latter operated by the founders of Wetzel’s Pretzels. Pie Five is a new fast food restaurant started by the more conventional pizza company Pizza Inn.
Karam said he thinks the trend is because customers are looking “for higher-quality food, but they still want convenience.” At One Fat Frog, we believe the more the merrier when it comes to food and we love experimentation. Good luck, Sbarro!
