We at One Fat Frog don’t like to get into politics. If you’re a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent or anything else, we would love to sell you the restaurant equipment that you need to fulfill you dream of getting a restaurant startup off the ground. So we’re not going to wade into the murky and polarizing waters of the government shut down. We do recognize, however, that there are a lot of frustrated and angry people out there. Whether you blame Congress, the White House, the Affordable Care Act, special interests, or anything else, a lot of people are fed up. People are losing money, including restaurants in the Washington D.C. area that are used to catering to federal employees.
As a result, many restaurants in the area have come out with promotions related to the government shutdown. Some Washington restaurants are offering special discounts to furloughed workers to help ease the pain of their lost income. Some are basically saying that politicians are not welcome in their establishments. While it probably wouldn’t be possible, or legal, to deny them service, the companies have found unique ways to express their frustration.
The Range is a contemporary American restaurant specializing in affordable cuisine. At their restaurant, government workers, furloughed or not, get a free pizza during the shutdown. There is one catch, though. Via Twitter, Chef Bryan Voltaggio made it clear that “members of Congress not eligible.”
Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café has its own way of easing the pain for those who are hurting financially while not including Congress. The restaurant is having Happy Hour prices all day long in the bar area. If you’re a member of Congress, though, you pay double. (This might be an example of when it would be good to be an obscure member of the House of Representatives who no one recognizes).
The Daily Dish is a restaurant and catering company in Silver Spring, Maryland. At their restaurant, furloughed government workers can get free cups of coffee. If you’re a member of Congress, though, it’s double price.
Pork Barrel BBQ is holding a special where government employees can get free pulled pork sandwiches. Congressmen and Congresswomen are excluded from the deal, however.
Will these restaurants actually be able to charge Congressional members double? Probably not. But sometimes venting helps and these restaurant owners have certainly done that.
