As I’ve discussed in the past on this blog that we at One Fat Frog love hitting the bar after a hard day of work. Hey, we all need to let loose a bit. Of course, it’s also nice to have a quick bite to eat while sitting around having yourself a pint or a glass of wine. And the movement of gastropubs, or bars that also have a pretty extensive food program as well, is a big thing. So, let’s talk bar food.

First off, why would you want to serve food if you have a bar? Well, the reason is obvious: food helps absorb alcohol, which means an individual can drink more and longer. Of course, there are limitations. For example, let’s say you have a bar where you allow smoking; your menu may be limited by that fact. But of course, there are always cheap and simple things you can do, like pretzels, peanuts, chips, and other snacks. One of my local places will usually serve popcorn for free! All you have to do is buy a beer.

Now, if you want to do a bit more than just simple snacks, then there are classic bar foods, like chicken wings, fries, or mozzarella sticks (my favorite). For things like that, you’ll need a fryer, and the size and capability of the fryer is decided based on your output. There are also burgers and hot sandwiches, where you might need a grill, charbroiler, or flat griddle. Again, the size and capability of those pieces of equipment you’ll need are based on how much you believe you’ll put out there.

Here’s what’s important though: no matter what kind of food program (if at all) you’re going to have, you need to take those costs into account. Like the bar that gives out free popcorn, they have a popcorn machine, plus however much it costs to buy the packages of kernels and butter. Whatever you get, you’ve got to remember to include those items in your cost and make sure you’re turning a profit in the end. Because that really is what it’s all about.

For now, happy drinking and be safe! And happy eating! And come by the Frog to get all of your bar food cooking needs!
