So sometime ago, I put up a post about restaurant-running myths in order to cool the ego a bit of those who are looking to start your own restaurant. Well, here are a couple more for you:
1. I can trust my family: Look, it’s rare that hear stories of family members who get along perfectly, go into business together, and find success without wanting to kill each other (metaphorically speaking, of course). The best advice that can be offered by experts is that getting in business with family is hard because you can’t get out of business with family. Think about it: if that restaurant doesn’t work out and you lose money, you have to deal with that every time you see someone. It’s hard to find people to trust in this business (or any business for that matter), so just be careful who you work with.
2. The neighbors will love it: Don’t assume anything! Your neighbors could have preconceived ideas of you and your business. Sure, you may give them a new place to hang out and catch a game, but that doesn’t mean they will automatically love you. You’ve got to win their loyalty just like you have to win the loyalty of other customers from the next town over. One of the ways to do that is to get to know the other businesses and the people in the neighborhood, create a dialogue, and become friends. It’ll ultimately work out better in the long run.
