You’ve heard of hate-watching, right? It’s where people watch a TV show specifically so they can talk (and blog) about how terrible it is. This trend of doing something you hate for the fun of hating it has become a bit of a trend in recent years, and restaurants are now getting in on hate-celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is a holiday with a lot of complex and conflicting emotions. Singles hate that they’re single on a day when they’re reminded of all the other happy couples out there. Couples who are struggling hate that they have to act like everything is perfect for one day. Normal couples hate how artificial and forced the holiday is. Yet somehow we all take part. We all know that couples are going to hit the romantic restaurants tonight to celebrate, but did you know that less upscale restaurants are trying to bring in those who hate Valentine’s Day to hate-celebrate the holiday?
It’s becoming a bit of a trend and we’re seeing a lot of it today. Some restaurants are ironically celebrating, such as Waffle House putting out fancy tablecloth and candles for romantic Valentine’s Day dinners. Others are catering to the bitter singles out there. Tilted Kilt is serving Bitter Lemonade and Punch Passion (in the Face) drink specials. They are also inviting diners to “sing the blues” on an open mic. Oh yeah, they will also be having a “Get Rid of Your Ex” photo destroying ceremony.
Perhaps the most out-there anti-Valentine’s Day special is at a Boston restaurant called Area Four. The restaurant is serving cookies that look like voodoo dolls and “food that feels your pain,” which includes a super-hot jerk chicken and “skewered lamb neck,” among others.
Some people love Valentine’s Day. The One Fat Frog office today has more red than green and there is heart-shaped candy everywhere. Your restaurant can make a lot of money catering to those happy couples tonight. But don’t forget about everyone else. If you need me tonight, I’ll be drinking bitter lemonade at the Tilted Kilt.
