If there’s one thing One Fat Frog loves as much as food, it’s sports. That’s why I’m always disappointed with the offers at the concession stands. As much as I like going to Orlando Magic games, it’s hard to stomach paying $8 for a bad hotdog or $10 for chicken fingers that taste like the kind of the frozen food aisle of your supermarket. Maybe I’m spoiled by the fact that UCF football games have 4Rivers barbecue, but I’m a firm believer that just because you’re at a game doesn’t mean you can’t have great food. A San Francisco restaurant entrepreneur agrees with me.

When the San Francisco 49ers move into their new stadium next year, there will be an emphasis placed on having quality eats instead of the standard bad nachos and hot dogs. Gourmet Chef Michael Mina plans to open a new restaurant, called The Bourbon Steak & Pub at the stadium. The restaurant will serve gourmet food and fine wine, but if you’re thinking a classy joint doesn’t fit in with the football atmosphere, don’t worry: There will also be 70 HD TVs so diners don’t miss any of the action on the field while eating. Before and after the game, diners can watch other games or highlights while they feast on gourmet treats.

Mina is a die-hard 49ers fan and he’s also a pretty big deal in the local chef community. He owns 17 restaurants in the Bay Area and has cooked for Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton. Having a gourmet restaurant at a football stadium may seem odd, but it’s all part of a plan to change the atmosphere and demographics of 49ers games. The new Levi’s Stadium is expected to bring in a more upscale crowd, in part because of its high ticket prices – fans must pay anywhere from $2,000 to $80,000 for “seat licenses” simply to get the opportunity to buy seats.
