Hi there, Froggy Blog readers. I introduced myself earlier this week and joked that my most important role with the Frog is being the office DJ. That may not be technically true, because the advertising, marketing and finance work that I do is also pretty important. However, you can never underestimate the importance of music.

Music has always been an important part of my life. Large amounts of my teenage years were spent in my room with a Soundgarden or Pearl Jam CD cranking, singing at the top of my lungs with liner notes in hand. When I went to college I was introduced to satellite radio, music blogs, and the wonderful world of obscure indie music. For the last 8 years I have worked as a freelance music critic for an online magazine. To me, music has always been important, whether it’s being comforted by listening to Buddy Guy talk about his own broken heart, getting angry with the guys in Metallica, or sharing the joy of a Ray Lamontagne ballad.

For those of you who have been to the One Fat Frog warehouse, you know that there is a stereo in the waiting area, which doubles as our office space. For a while, the stereo simply played the local pop radio station. However, after hearing Katy Perry sing about having the eye of a tiger for the 100th time in a day, IT guy Neil and I were close to slitting our wrists. A decision was then made. “Everyone, go get whatever CDs you have in your car!”

"You're gonna hear me roar-or-or-or-or-or!"

“You’re gonna hear me roar-or-or-or-or-or-or-or!”

That day I was the only one with CDs in my car, so we played my music. Eventually, I became the de facto DJ of the One Fat Frog office. It’s not as easy as you might think, though. I have over 700 albums at home, but I only bring a case of about 50 CDs to work. Of those albums, I have to try to play music that will satisfy everyone. Valerie only wants to hear upbeat music (scratch Civil Wars, Cold War Kids and every blues album from my playlist). Bill doesn’t want anything loud and aggressive (remove Guns n’ Roses, Metallica, Foo Fighters). One elderly lady sitting on the couches seemed scared by the Black Keys album (so no garage blues: remove the White Stripes also). Patrick only likes instrumental music; nothing with singing (I decided to ignore his preference as it made things impossible).

A frequent question I get shortly after putting a CD in is “who is this?” The question comes in many different tones, though. Sometimes it means “this is weird; why would you play that?” (used to refer to Fiona Apple and/or Hooray for Earth). Sometimes it means “I love this; I have a new favorite band” (used to refer to Broken Bells and/or Fiona Apple). The only thing everyone (but Patrick) could agree on is Dave Matthews Band, once again proving my longstanding theory that everyone likes Dave Matthews (except my dad). So the next time you come into the One Fat Frog office to buy some restaurant equipment, if you find yourself either loving or hating the music, chances are you’re not alone.
