So, it’s often that we found ourselves here at One Fat Frog thinking about weird food stories. We all experience them, we all hear them, and once in a while, you find one that just cracks you up. This is one of those stories.

Maple syrup is one heck of expensive product. It takes about over five gallons of maple sap to make a quart of syrup. That’s a lot of sap to make so little syrup. This stuff is so profitable, Quebec keeps a huge supply of syrup safe in what is called the Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve. In 2012, an audit revealed that 6 million pounds of syrup adding up to $18 million was suddenly gone. Just…gone! This heist did not happen in a single day, as one would guess. It took the thieves several months to get that much syrup out, if not longer. Since the discovery, they’ve made several arrests and recovered much of the syrup.

And there you go: today’s weird food story for you. Hope this helps make you smile the next time you have a pancake.
