We deal quite often with a whole bunch of people out there that are starting up their very first restaurant endeavor. To those, I salute you. The restaurant business is a tough one to crack, but if you do well, you can do very well. Of course, like any job out there, there are myths to be examined. There are a whole bunch of myths out there about running a restaurant and on this myth-busting edition, we tackle some more. So here we go:
-“I’ll save money by cutting advertising”: There are lots of great ways to save money, but cutting advertising is a bad place to do it. You’ve got a business that needs people to come in the door. If you cut advertising, how will they know you’re there? Even if business slows down, you need to keep advertising out there so that people know you’re around and they’ll check you out.
-“This trend is going to stay!”: Uhhh…no it’s not. That’s why it’s called a trend. Trends come and go, and you don’t want to create a whole restaurant concept around one trend. You could piggy-back off a trend to start, but make sure you’re prepared for when that trend slows down or disappears. Because trends will disappear. It’s what they do.
-“I’ll be home for Christmas”: Or really any other holiday. Yes, most people take vacations around the holidays, but what do they do when they’re on vacation? Go out for dinner! That means you’ll be finding yourself at the restaurant either in the office, behind the bar, or managing the floor during the holidays. It’s not a bad thing; in fact, it’s good for business, especially if you’re near retail outlets and stores. If you want to take a holiday off, it might be a while, especially if you’re just starting out.
There are some more myths for your aspiring restauranteurs, but I remind you to not be discouraged. Running a restaurant can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and if you plan on doing so, then we are behind you one-hundred percent. And we’ll see you for the holidays.
