Awww, the First of April. Not a real holiday, but we all know this day as April Fool’s Day, a day on which even the most mild-mannered friend becomes a fiendishly prankish scoundrel. I don’t typically partake, although last year I did mention I was getting married. I wasn’t, of course, and I can’t use that joke again because the Internet’s memory has no end. So in the great spirit of this day, I thought it would be fun to share some amazingly epic April Fool’s pranks.
-In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were harvesting spaghetti from spaghetti trees. This one was met by phone calls to the BBC asking where one might acquire a spaghetti tree.
-In 1996, Taco Bell ran an ad saying that they had bought the Liberty Bell and planned on changing its name to the “Taco Liberty Bell.” Give it up to the White House press secretary who, when asked of the purchase, added that Ford had bought the Lincoln Memorial.
-In 1997, Burger King launched an ad in USA Today announcing a Left-Handed Whopper. I’m just going to let that one simmer for a bit.
-In 2008, those rascals at BBC put out a video showing flying penguins. It was CGI, people. Penguins can’t fly.
Those are some pretty memorable pranks. Hopefully you don’t scare your wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, friends, and family too badly, and have a good time.
P.S. I’m getting married.
