In today’s day and age, I’m sure most people know what a logo is. But, just in case some of us forgot, a logo is something visual that represents your restaurant’s brand. Think about all the great logos out there for various businesses (the Golden ‘M’…a stylish text showing an ‘N’ and a ‘Y’ together…a frog wearing a chef’s hat…). Chances are you recognize a lot of those descriptions and you can identify the brand each belongs to (and if you’re not sure, the first was McDonald’s, the second the New York Yankees, and the last one was ours, One Fat Frog Restaurant Equipment; pay attention people!).
To create a logo that will be both a lasting memory in your customers’ minds and equally as meaningful in that way, here are some quick tips to consider when designing your logo:
-Your logo must be timeless, so don’t use anything that might date your logo, like a reference to a current fad or even you and your business partner’s names (you may not always be business partners). Again, refer back to those logos that have stood the test of time.
-You want the logo to be clear so that it can stand out with a lot of bright colors but can also be easily recognizable by those who might be colorblind. No matter what the backdrop is, your logo should be easy to see.
-Of all places to practice the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid), designing your logo should have that written all of it. Think of your favorite, iconic logos and see how simple they are. They all make you think of one thing: the brand they represent, and that’s what you want.
-Make sure your logo looks just as good on a business card as it does on a billboard. Yes, putting it on a billboard with get your traffic in the door, but if you’re looking forward to handing someone a card and saying, “Hi, I’m So-and-so and I run Such-a-Restaurant,” and the logo looks bad, it’s not quite as compelling.
-Don’t let a lot of people get involved in the discussion of creating the logo. This is very important. The more people involved, the more complicated the process gets. Again, you need to be simple, so make sure you only have a handful of people (if that many) involved in the process.
Remember these pointers, and you’ll have that timeless logo in no time at all. And once you’ve got that logo, make sure you put it on a business card and drop it off at our office. It would make us happy.
