Bad news for foodies in Clearwater, FL. According to the Daily City (the curators of the successful Central Florida Food Truck Bazaars), the mayor of Clearwater refuses to change city laws that prohibit food trucks. He states that he’s not interested in opening up Clearwater to food trucks because he would like to see the city’s restaurants strive in these tough economic times. According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times:
“City law forbids the selling or peddling of goods from trucks and other vehicles in large sections of Clearwater, including on Cleveland Street. For those areas not included in the ban, vendors need a permit. But Clearwater’s community development code doesn’t establish food trucks as acceptable recipients of permits.”
And the mayor has no plans to amend these laws. It makes no sense. Food trucks create a massive amount of foot traffic in areas there might be none. People walk by stores, restaurants, bars, they would have normally paid no mind to. Also, according to the Daily City article on the matter, many people find themselves going into local restaurants after the bazaar. They use the food truck items to wet their palette and then finish off their appetites in a local restaurant.
