When riding my bike one early morning in April, I was almost back to the house when I spotted a baby opossum crawling across the sidewalk towards the street. I immediately stopped and turned him around, but he seemed a little lost and confused. Remembering that they’re nocturnal, I figured he was just blinded by the sun, wandering aimlessly to find his mother. I brought him home, figured out what to feed him through internetting prowess, and scheduled a visit to the vet. Of course, after I named him Maximilian, he was my pet, and that was that.
Turns out he’s very lucky I found him. The muscles in his front right paw are atrophied, causing him to move with a limp, so he could never run wild – or run, really, though he does try! What likely happened was that he was born with a weak paw and fell off of his mother (babies latch onto their mother’s back and hold on for dear life!) since he couldn’t hold on tightly. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
He’s surprisingly tame, and acts like a cat. Since I found him when he was only four weeks old, he hadn’t been taught to be nasty or defensive yet, so he’s extremely friendly to everyone he meets. He started off in a small cardboard box inside, and now, at almost a year old, lives in my screened-in patio with a bamboo tree that he uses for a shade, a life-size R2-D2 cooler, and a giant beach blanket he burrows in. Max is pretty smart for a little critter; he’s litter-trained, and he wants to come in, he gets on his hind legs and knocks on the sliding glass door. He spends Sundays sleeping in and eating bacon in bed.
