I can’t really explain why, but I love movie awards shows. They frustrate me to no end; the films, writers, and actors I root for never win; they keep me up too late on weekdays. But I love them still. The Oscars are my Super Bowl. Sometimes I even dress up super fancy just to sit on my couch and watch them. Sort of pathetic, but fun nonetheless.

Last night was the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards – an award show whose winners are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Ricky Gervais, the creator of the original UK Office and one of the funniest men on the planet, hosted for the second year in a row – a surprise since last year he tore everyone in the room apart. He managed to offend nearly everyone last year, Ooooo God forbid anyone makes fun of the celebrities!

Anyway, here’s my thoughts on some of the night’s winners and disappointments. Peter Dinklage won best Supporting Actor for his role on Game of Thrones, one of the best shows on TV right now. Dinklage never smiles. The Artist won nearly every award possible. I’ve actually not seen The Artist yet, but some critics I trust say it’s well crafted but lacks a real soul. Sounds like my ex! I can’t believe Breaking Bad (THEE best show on television) wasn’t nominated for Best Drama Series, but Bryan Cranston was nominated for Best Actor so that was good even though he didn’t win. If you’re not watching Breaking Bad, it’s over.

I’m really happy that the actresses from The Help keep winning awards. I went into that movie thinking it would be a sappy, manipulative melodrama, but I ended up crying like a little girl with a skinned knee by the end of it. If you haven’t seen The help, it’s a really powerful film about African American domestic workers in the 1960s. Really moving stuff.

The Oscar nominations will be announced any day now. Color me excited!
