It’s been a while since my last update. I’ve been out of the state, tired, and just plain kept flaking when it came to taking pictures. I have to start taking for because it’s almost time to let the babies go into the wild (the tree in my front yard).
Max and Ajax are totally independent when it comes to eating and they’re definitely ready to pack their bags and scope out forested real estate. But they’re a family and we have to wait another week until Swan is ready to go. He’s a little younger than the rest and still dependent on the formula. But yesterday we (accidentally) learned that despite his young age, Swan is one helluva fearless climber.
I took the crew’s cage outside yesterday for a couple hours. We’ve been doing this for a week now so they can get used to the sounds, smells, and sights outside. Swan still needs to be held when he’s fed, so I took him out to feed. He usually just sits calmly in my lap but I should’ve known he’d get spooked outside. He shot like a rocket up the big tree in our front yard and headed right for the top. I was terrified. He’s not ready to fend for himself. I tried everything to coax him down – mainly spreading formula and peanut butter on the tree.
But he was having the time of his life up there. He boldly jumped from branch to branch and ran all over the tree top, smelling every inch of it. My fiance and I stood vigil at the foot of the tree. Darkness fell and we really started panicking. But, quietly as a squirrel ninja, Swan descended on his own and jumped right into my hands. His adventure was over and now he was hungry! Man, I’m going to miss these guys. No doubt we’ll be fostering more squirrels in the future.
