I lived in Salem, MA (the Witch City) for a good six or seven years. While I was in school at Salem State University, my taste and budget favored dive bars. I don’t mind dives, I quite like them in fact. I like having the feeling that I might be stabbed at any moment while having a burger and beer. But sometimes when I was feeling saucy I would hit up one of the more upscale joints. My favorite? Rockafellas on Essex St.
Located in the historic Daniel Lowe Building, Rockafellas incorporates the vault and double depth windows that were put in by the National Exchange Bank in the 1860s. Today they use the vault to store wine and liquor and clients can admire the absolutely gorgeous vault door as they dine. I tried to find a picture of the vault door to no avail.
Just being in Rockafellas made me feel classier – no matter how dirty my shoes were. It’s a casual restaurant that offers affordable menu items like gourmet pizzas (my favorite), steaks, pastas, and an array of seafood. The vibe is always great and at night, the lights dim and entertainment is offered. I went to their “country night” one Thursday and despite being nearly ignorant of country music, I had a blast. I know I ended up there on my birthday once, but I can’t remember too much. I’ve been told I’m an incredible dancer though.
So if you find yourself in Salem (hopefully not this time of year when it’s a complete mad house) give Rockafellas a shot. Tell them the Four Eyed Frog sent you and the waitress will probably look at you sideways and spill your water.
